Event Information

History is not only told in books. Our past catches up with us in blockbuster games like Wolfenstein, Assassins Creed, or Call of Duty. It meets us in memes and posts on social media, is often the subject of media arts in museums, in extended reality projects, and is part of our everyday pop culture world. Immersive media are changing and expanding our notions and interpretations of space and time, and thus the axes with which we construct and interpret history.

With the XR-History Festival, we celebrate the diversity of memory culture and demonstrate how through digital engagement with history, we can discuss and establish a better present and future. The XR History Award is a prize initiated every two years by the eCommemoration program of the Körber-Stiftung. It honors projects that utilize immersive technologies to explore artistic approaches in historical storytelling, history communication, or memory culture. It is currently the only award for digital art that explicitly deals with projects interweaving past, present, and future.

The XR-History Award will be presented this year on June 6th during the XR-History Festival at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. As part of the event, the winners of the XR History Festival 2024 will offer a workshop at the SCHOOL OF SURVIVAL.
